Council hears updates

Once the other agenda items have been worked through at the Nevada City Council meetings, council members are allowed to ask for, or provide, updates and information regarding events, issues and other matters. The Tuesday evening meeting heard an update on the intersection of Elm and Vernon Streets, an upcoming infrastructure board meeting and Halloween festivities.

Mayor George Knox asked if they would be doing anything for Halloween. Chamber of Commerce Director Sheree Gayman informed the board that the Safe Streets Halloween would be held on October 31 from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the square, and that Moore-Few and NRMC will be doing something as well. “It should be a fun night for our town.”

Mayor Pro-tem Carol Gallagher asked for information on the upcoming infrastructure board meeting. “I noticed there was going to be public hearing about the street projects, but there is nothing showing what the street projects that are being proposed.”

JD Kehrman, city manager, answered that it is their first meeting and is when they start gathering information from the public.

“So if people have issues or concerns, then that is where they need to go to voice that?” Gallagher asked.

“Yes,” Kehrman answered. “And I want to say this, we have always taken the posture that if people don’t want to go and address the infrastructure board, people sometimes just call and ask us to take a look at their street, and then we will submit those for their recommendation.” The meeting is set for Thursday, October 17, at 6 p.m.

Council member Lyndon Eberhard asked for an update on the signs at Benton Elementary. Police Chief Casey Crane, who has been in ongoing dialogue with the district regarding the intersection of Vernon and Elm streets, provided an update.

Crane showed a map of the intersection and pointed out the offset stop sign on the east side to accommodate for parking spaces. “That offsets the stop sign further back and we think that is part of the problem. “I have met with the assistant superintendent and Mr. Streeter, the principal, and what we are looking to do in that area is to modify that southeast corner of the intersection to bring the sign in line with the rest.” Crane said the sign will be relocated to where it would normally be. He added that the unused crosswalk on Elm will be removed while the ones that do get used will be updated.
