District playoffs: Tigers square off with top-seeded Mt. Vernon Mountaineers

Thursday, October 31, 2019

Looking to extend their season, the Nevada Tigers are set to tangle with the top-seeded Mount Vernon Mountaineers in the Class 3 District 6 football playoffs.

Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. tonight in Mt. Vernon.

The teams previously met back in week two, with Nevada falling in the Big 8 Conference cross-division road match-up, 43-22. Mount Vernon successfully navigated through the Big 8 gauntlet, and enters the Class 3 playoffs, 9-0 overall.

With his squad entering at 0-9 overall, Nevada head coach Wes Beachler said the Tigers had a "spirited" practice on Tuesday.

"Things looked pretty sharp," Beachler said during his Tiger Talk radio show Wednesday.

Beachler indicated his full complement of players was not available for the early-week practice, with some fulfilling other school-related obligations.

"The majority of them have stuck around," Beachler noted. "It's just learn to finish. We talk about it all the time — if you start something, you finish it. The kids have done a pretty good of that. There's a few that have messaged me during the day, and told me they're going to be getting ready for district-band, and things like that. Which is fine, that's something they're involved in as well."

Added Beachler on the Tiger Talk show: "I think we only had one that chose not to continue. So, pretty good turnout with the kids. Go to my grave, kind of old-school, in that — if you start something, you finish it. And, that's the way we want the boys to play. Practice today, there was no doubt that the kids we still have are out there working hard, and practicing hard. You would never be able to tell what our record is by the way we practice each day. They show up with a great attitude, and they're working hard — it's a good bunch of young men."

Said Beachler of tonight's clash: "We just want to play well, and I believe we can win. I know there's probably a lot of people that just don't think that's going to happen. I told our kids 'I believe you can win, and if you believe you can win — it can happen.' "
