Brenda Joy Preston

Joy Preston 77, of Nevada, passed away Saturday, Aug. 1, 2020, at Mercy Hospital in Joplin surrounded by her family. Joy was born July 15, 1943, in Metz, Mo., the daughter of Emmett Monroe and Arvilla Louise (Arrasmith) Hogan. She married Johnny W. Preston Sept. 2, 1961 and he survives of the home.

Joy graduated from Nevada High School in 1961. She worked as a waitress at Pokorny Drug, and later in accounting at Farm and Home and retired from the State Hospital in 2001. Joy was inseparable from her husband Johnny as the couple enjoyed fishing together, turkey and deer hunting, and camping. Joy was an excellent black powder marksman with the pistol and the long rifle. She and Johnny traveled and attended Black Powder Shoots in a several state areas where Joy won many, many awards for her prowess as a shooter. Joy also enjoyed documenting their time and travels together through scrapbooking. Recently Joy has enjoyed painting and drawing. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Nevada.

Joy is survived by her husband of the home; son, Dennis M. Preston, Raytown, Mo.; daughter-in-law, Atonka Smith (Brian) Nevada; grandchildren, Katryna Preston and Wyatt Preston; sister, Beverly Fox (Jack) Milo; brother, Gerald Hogan (Rhoda) San Antonio, Texas; sister, Marilyn Moore (Larry) Springfield, Mo.; sister-in-law, Lynda Hogan, Nevada; nieces, nephews, extended family and special friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Darren; and a brother, Charles “Chuck” Hogan.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 4, in the Ferry Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Kevin Daugherty and Roger Beach officiating. Interment will follow in the Newton Burial Park. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until service time. Memorials may be made to Vernon County Cancer Relief Fund in care of the Ferry Funeral Home.
