Mamie Custine

Tuesday, November 3, 2020

Mamie Jean (Schmidt) Custine was born on February 13,1935, to John J. and Anna Schmidt in Goltry, Oklahoma. She passed away peacefully on October 31, 2020, at age 85.

Mamie grew up in Goltry, Oklahoma and attended school in Jet, Oklahoma. She gave her heart to the Lord Jesus Christ and was baptized at Pleasant View Mennonite Church by Minister Reuben Koehn on October 19,1951. After high school, she worked for a time at banks in Enid and Goltry, Oklahoma, and at the hospital in Halstead, Kansas.

In the Fall of 1964, Mamie moved to Missouri. She purchased an 80-acre farm 10 miles east of Nevada, Missouri, on K Hwy. She became a Charter Member of Living Faith Mennonite Church, Walker, Missouri, which was founded there in 1965. Shortly after this, her parents moved to join her in Missouri, helping to work the farm where they had a small herd of cattle.

Mamie was joined in marriage to Elbert E. Custine on May 27, 1967, and to this union two daughters were born. Elbert farmed and also had an aerial spraying business, and Mamie worked at several different jobs over the years: bank teller, sewing at the tent factory, working in the Nevada City Hospital kitchen, and working at the Nevada Manor nursing home. Later on, she worked as an in-home C.N.A. staying with elderly people in their homes. But for much of the children’s growing-up years, she was a stay-at-home mom. Mamie and her family attended Living Faith Mennonite Church at Walker, then later Maranatha Christian Fellowship in Nevada. Mamie and Elbert joined the Nevada Seventh-Day Adventist Church in 1999. In early 2018, at the urging of her children, Mamie left her beloved farm and moved to a small home in Nevada.

Mamie enjoyed gardening, had multiple flower and vegetable gardens, and loved sharing vegetables with family and friends, which was always much appreciated! She was a true cat lover and also loved all her dogs! She always had a compassionate heart for those less fortunate around her, and was always ready to lend her help in any way she could.

Mamie was preceded in death by one brother, Orville Schmidt; her parents, John and Anna Schmidt; and her husband, Elbert Custine.

Left to cherish her memory are her brother, Marvin Schmidt, and his wife Betty, of Burns, Kansas; daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Robert Fox, Harwood, Missouri; and daughter and son-in-law, Leslie and Justin Roberts, Omaha, Nebraska; five grandchildren; numerous cousins; and many friends.

Memorial service to be held at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Nevada, Missouri, at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3, 2020, Pastor Dennis Mix officiating.
