NEVC boys blast Ballard

Friday, February 5, 2021

After going six weeks between their first two games at the start of the season, the Northeast Vernon County High School basketball teams had less than 24 hours to rest between contests against Ballard and Hume this week.

The Knights fared the best out of the two, trouncing Ballard 59-11 at home on Tuesday before getting stung by the Hornets 66-45 on the road Wednesday.

NEVC senior Justin Culbertson scored a game-high 21 points against the Bulldogs, upping his season average to 17.4 per game.

Sophomore teammate Kylan Bachand added 17 points and 13 rebounds, while junior Garrett Culbertson pulled down 13 boards, as well.

Justin Culbertson put up 20 more points against Hume, and Bachand contributed 13 points and seven rebounds — but NEVC was unable to overcome a 23-9 deficit in the opening quarter, even despite outscoring the Hornets in the second half.

The Lady Knights have only been able to use six players for most of the season, and it showed in both of their games this week, losing 35-26 to Ballard and 53-39 to Hume.

Sophomore Eden Coleman led the team against the Lady Bulldogs with 11 points and 21 rebounds. Against the Lady Hornets, Crae Hutchison scored 12 while Charity Middleton had 11 points and 10 boards.

Both NEVC teams are 4-9 on the season and will head to Miami on Friday.
