Comets catch second seed in A.I.I. tourney

Friday, April 30, 2021

The Cottey College softball team will be the no. 2 seed out of four teams in the 2021 Association of Independent Institutions Championship beginning Thursday, May 6, in Lawrenceville, Ga.

Nationally-ranked Georgia Gwinnett earned the top seed and home-field advantage thanks to a 26-win season against a tougher schedule of opponents than the Comets — who are 24-6 but had three of the country’s top-10 teams cancel on them in the month of April to squeeze in more conference contests.

The Grizzlies will open play against no. 4 Crowley’s Ridge College (19-17) at noon on May 6, before Cottey battles no. 3 Edward Waters College (19-10) at 2:30 p.m.

In the conference tournament’s double-elimination format, the winners of those games will face each other at noon the next day, while the losers will play for their seasons afterward.

The championship will begin at noon on May 8, with the top two teams automatically qualifying for the NAIA National Championship later this month.

“It is going to be a tough event that will require us to be playing at our best,” Cottey head coach Mark Skapin stated. “We are most definitely proud of our season so far and we hope to qualify for nationals with a top-two showing.”
