Mustangs one win away from another MINK League crown

Friday, July 30, 2021

The St. Joseph Mustangs followed up a come-from-behind 8-7 upset victory over the Clarinda A's in the MINK League North Championship on Tuesday with a 9-7 win over the Sedalia Bombers in the opening game of the Championship Series on Wednesday.

After an off day on Thursday, the two teams will square off for game two on Friday at Phil Welch Stadium — where the Mustangs will have a chance to repeat as league champions in the best-of-three series.

St. Joseph surrendered seven runs in the first inning against Clarinda, a team that finished the regular season with the best record in the MINK League. But the Mustangs kept the A's scoreless for the next eight innings, all the while scoring eight runs over the final three frames to keep their season alive.

The Bombers, meanwhile, won the South Championship with a 9-3 win over the Joplin Outlaws Tuesday night at Joe Becker Stadium.

A third game between St. Joseph and Sedalia, if necessary, will take place Saturday night at Phil Welch Stadium.
