Martha “Edith” Stockstill
Martha Edith (Hickman) Stockstill departed this life on Sunday, Aug. 15, 2021, at the age of 88, at Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada, Mo. She was born Sept. 20, 1932, on a farm five miles west of Schell City to Henry Leroy and Lena Leota (Armbrust) Hickman. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and joined the Blue Mound Baptist Church. After moving to Ketterman, she joined the Berea Christian Church until it closed, and then attended the Walker Christian Church. She attended grade school at the Flat Rock School and then the Schell City School, graduating in 1950.
On Nov. 26, 1952, she married William Don Stockstill in Harrison, Arkansas and they celebrated 64 years of marriage before his death. They were the parents of one daughter. Edith was a homemaker until the fall of 1967 when she went to work at the Nevada State Hospital, where she worked in food service for 20 years. She lived in Vernon County all of her life and enjoyed taking care of her home, yard, and garden.
She is survived by her daughter, Martha “Marty” Patton (Rich) of Walker, Mo.; grandchildren, Anthony Cornell (Ashley) of Olathe, Kan., Jenna Lowry (Kris) of Joplin, Mo., and Dexter Patton of Olathe, Kan.; and great-grandchildren, Jessalyn, Kinsey, and Harvey Cornell. She is also survived by her sister, Lola Irene Hensley of El Dorado Springs, Mo., and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and brothers, Claude Earl Hickman, Fred William Hickman, and Charles Melvin Hickman.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 18, at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 7:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Interment will be at the Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Walker, Mo.
Memorials are suggested in Edith’s memory to either the Mt. Vernon Cemetery Association or the Walker Christian Church in care of the funeral home.
