Ira Daniel Hogan Jr., 75, Horton, Mo., passed away on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2022, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Mo. Dan was born Aug. 25, 1946, in Nevada, Mo., to Ira D. Hogan Sr. and Angeline M. (Varone) Hogan.

Dan grew up in Nevada and graduated from Nevada High School in 1964. While working at Nellie Don, in Nevada, he met the love of his life, Sheila Rife, whom he married before he was drafted and went to Vietnam. After spending two years in Germany, the Army sent him home where he took a job with the Missouri Pacific Railroad where he was employed for 37 years. He worked as a telegrapher at numerous train depots until Union Pacific bought them and then he was a customer service representative in St. Louis then Omaha until he retired in 2006. He has lived in Horton the past 57 years. Dan enjoyed talking to people and telling stories. He could be found somewhere outside in his yard or garden or at his favorite fishing spots. He loved spending time with his daughter and granddaughter.

Dan and Sheila had celebrated 55 years together before her passing on Sept. 5, 2021. He was also preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his daughter, Diane Rutledge (fiance, Mark Van Doren) of Horton, Mo.; granddaughter, Angeline Maria Rutledge (fiance, Rush Wilson) of the home; his brother, Russell (Tammy) Hogan of Nevada, Mo.; sister, Linda (Ed) Heflin, of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 4, at Ferry Funeral Home, in Nevada, with Randy Call officiating. Interment will follow in Balltown Cemetery in Horton. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home.
