Joyce Emma Post

Joyce Emma Post, 93, Nevada, passed away on Monday, Dec. 5, 2022, in Nevada. She was born June 6, 1929, in Harrison, Ark., to Mildred Murdy Newcomb and Vern Newcomb. She was the fourth born of six children. Joyce was married to Elmer C. Post on June 18, 1948, in Kansas City, Mo. He preceded her in death on Sept. 16, 2011.

Joyce grew up in Arkansas, Iowa, and Kansas City Mo. She graduated from Westport High School in 1946. She attended Kansas City Junior College. She was introduced to the love of her life by her brother James Newcomb who attended Cleveland Chiropractic College at the same time as her husband (Dr. Elmer Post). Following his graduation in 1949, the couple moved to Nevada, Mo., to establish Post Chiropractic Office. As their family grew, Joyce thrived as a stay-at-home mom creating a warm and loving abode. She was active in her children’s lives, serving as PTA President, Cub Scout Leader, Room mother (sometimes for more than one classroom at a time) and she was involved with Vacation Bible school for many years. In addition to being the office manager of their chiropractic office from 1972 to 2001, she was also involved in Thalia’s and Order of the Eastern Star. She was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church and active in the Methodist Women. She was an active Beta Sigma Phi member and was inducted into the Diamond Circle in 2011, honoring 60 years of membership.

Joyce and Elmer loved to travel. Early in their marriage they would often load “the kids” in the car and set off on a journey. It was often a drive through the countryside or a camping trip to the lake. It was sometimes a trip across the country. The adventures were numerous and delightful. They were always full of fun, songs, and countless times included bologna sandwiches that she made in the front seat and passed back to the herd. Later in life, Joyce and Elmer were thrilled to be able to travel to St. Thomas, Hawaii, Alaska, Germany, England, and other destinations. Wherever they went, they were always “side-by-side,” sharing a love we all aspire to. When they stayed home, they loved to host dinners, holidays, reunions, and birthday gatherings for their immediate family as well as for their extended families. Their hospitality was enjoyed by friends as well as family and they always made everyone feel welcome.

She will be fondly remembered by her sister Clara Frederickson and Clara’s husband Steve of Sequim, Wash.; her brother, Paul Newcomb, St. Thomas, USVI; her six children and their families: Dr. Kay Carver (Dr. Gary), Kansas City, Mo., Janet Erwin (Bill), Nevada, Deb Zoglmann (Steve), Nevada, Dr. Daniel Post (Cathy), Oklahoma City, Okla., Don Post (Tina), Wheatland, Mo., and Nancy Jeffries (Bill), Nevada; 15 grandchildren: Krista Carver, Kimberly Carver, Brett Erwin, Zach Erwin, Quent Erwin, Kael Zoglmann, Emily Zoglmann Hunt, Shawn Zoglmann, Jay Post, Lindsey Post, Cassie Post Drake, Rebecca Jeffries, Joshua Jeffries, Teesha Bell, and Doug Bell; her 26 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by one infant son, Carl Edward Post; her husband, Dr. Elmer C Post; her parents, Drs. Vern and Mildred Newcomb; three brothers, Bryon Newcomb, Dr. Edwin Newcomb, and Dr. James Newcomb.

Joyce is a wonderfully fitting name for our beloved mother who was so full of joy. She was gracious, selfless, and kind. She chose to be happy and positive throughout her life. She had a strong faith and set an incredible example for all of us to try to follow. Joyce will live forever in the hearts of those who loved her.

A special thank you to the staff of the Bungalows of Nevada and Heartland Hospice for the personalized and caring attention to her during her last years.  

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Dec. 9, at Ferry Funeral Home, in Nevada with the Rev. Michelle Whitlock officiating. A committal service will follow in the Welborn Cemetery, Moundville. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Joyce’s memory may be made to The Children’s Center or the United Methodist Church, Nevada, in care of the funeral home.
