On Feb. 6, students and faculty advisors from Region 11 of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) gathered in Carthage to elect officers for the coming year and choose candidates for state office. Region 11 consists of 30 schools in southwest Missouri among which is the Northeast Vernon County (NEVC) R-1 School District in Walker.

A rather rigorous process is utilized as candidates for office must appear before four separate committees and answer an extensive and detailed battery of questions, demonstrating their knowledge about FCCLA and the position they seek.

From NEVC, Abby Sumpter was elected Vice President of Region 11’s competition known as Star Events (students taking action with recognition). Callie Ensor, was chosen as Region 11 parliamentarian while Maleah Hogan was selected as Region 11’s candidate to be a state FCCLA officer.

Said Sumpter, “It’s a bit nerve wracking to stand before the four committees and answer their questions; I’m not that used to public speaking. Sumpter joined Hogan and Ensor in praising their faculty sponsor, Laurie Bybee for coaching them in knowledge and leadership. Added Hogan, “She’s why our students do really well at every event. Yeah, it’s work but she makes it fun.”
