On Monday evening, July 24, President Phyllis Sprenkle convened the Sheldon Community Betterment Committee to discuss plans for this year's eagerly anticipated Sheldon's Old Settlers' Picnic. Taking the floor, she handed over the reins to Board Member Melinda Strom-Sewell, who proceeded to share the itinerary and reveal some new changes and additions in store for the event.

Sewell began by announcing the Grand Marshals for this year's Picnic — Eddie and Jeanie Fowler. Notably, their daughter, Jennifer Hurt, is set to deliver a rendition of the National Anthem during the opening ceremonies on Thursday night, Aug. 17.

Musical entertainment for the evening will feature Matthew Harper from Nevada, treating attendees to a mix of folk and gospel music.

Friday evening's schedule remains unchanged, with the Portia Corner Band playing for the street dance. Similarly, Saturday's lineup will remain as in previous years, but with the addition of a Cornhole Tournament/Bingo/Pie Auction Fundraiser, aimed at generating funds for the restoration of the Old School Building.

In addition to this, the Dueling Silos Bed and Breakfast Venue, owned by Neal and Kelly Gerken, will host a couple of open houses on Saturday. The Honky Tonk Dream Band will provide the musical accompaniment for the Saturday night street dance.

Sewell also shared the news that Party Station and Inflatables will offer free rides on both Friday and Saturday during the Picnic. This year also boasts a larger number of royalty candidates, totaling 14.

Amidst all the fresh elements, some beloved and traditional activities will carry on, such as the Ice Cream Social, exhibits in the Community Building, Lawn and Antique Tractor Pull, 5K Run/Walk, Kids Races, Kids Tractor Pull, Horseshoe Pitching, Baby Show, Watermelon Feed, Softball Tournament, Car Show, the parade, royalty coronation, and a diverse array of food truck vendors.

Sewell expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming Picnic and the many events that it will encompass. The committee appreciated her time and effort in keeping them informed about the planned festivities.

With the committee's approval, President Sprenkle adjourned the meeting, and the members will meet again next month on Aug. 28 for further preparations.
