Senior Food Box distribution event slated for Tuesday, Sept. 19

Wednesday, September 13, 2023

September is Hunger Action Month — the Feeding America network’s annual national campaign designed to inspire people to take action and raise awareness in the United States.

Food shouldn’t be an impossible choice. For many people, food isn’t a choice between certain foods. It’s a choice between food and other crucial needs such as medicine, electricity or childcare. It’s a choice more and more people are forced to make locally.

This past year, Healthy Nevada and Ozark Food Harvest have teamed up to provide Vernon County residents who are 60 or older a monthly fresh produce box. “This summer, we have seen a spike in the number of residents coming to us. We believe inflation is keeping these numbers consistently high,” says Dana Redburn, Lead Strategist for Healthy Nevada. “We are thankful we can continue this service and appreciate the patience residents have shown as we determine the number of boxes we can distribute.”

Senior Food Boxes are distributed the third Tuesday of every month at Walker City Park and Emery’s Truck Stop in Deerfield. Residents who are unable to pick up at these locations can have a friend or relative pick up for them or boxes can be taken to the Healthy Nevada office for Wednesday pickup.

The next food distribution will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 19. Distribution will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Walker and then noon to 1 p.m., at Emery’s. For more information, call (417) 283-4575.
