Nevada Speedway Report -- July 3

For Nevada Daily Mail

Fireworks and a full moon shined over the Nevada Speedway and racing was hot on the track as the Late Model drivers competed for the $1,000 prize money to win the Feature on Saturday. Drivers drew for their starting positions in the heat races and those finishes determined their starting places in the Features.

Fans saw lots of crashes, bumps, bangs, spins and just for good measure we had a roll over in the Mini-Stock division. Mark Godsey gave everyone a scare as his car landed on it's top during the Mini-Stock Feature. He was able to climb from the car and was okay, the car is another question.

Next week the Lightening Outlaw Mini-Sprints visit Nevada again.

Saturday's action:

Late Model heat race winners were Kerry Schulze of Moundville, and Victor Sims of Peculiar.

The 40-lap Feature started with Schulze and Sims racing side by side and trading the lead for several laps until they got together and Mike Boultinghouse went around both claiming the lead.

Schulze regained the lead.

A yellow flew as Chuck Redlon tried to climb the wall. Schulze was in the lead for the restart. Schulze, Jack Simmons and Boultinghouse broke away from the rest of the field as they raced for the front. Schulze maintained the lead and claimed his second win of the season and this win moved him to fourth place in the points standings.

Modified heat race winners were Kevin Morrow of Nevada, Rodney Sigg of Iola, Kan., and Jay Laymons Jr. of Savonburg, Kan.

The B-Feature started with Brantlee Gotschall in the lead. He held this lead all the way to claim the win.

Gotschall, Dennis Bunger, Darren Roberts, Jeff Cutshaw and Brian Hall all moved to the back of the A-Feature. Morrow and Sigg raced side by side for several laps at the start of the A-Feature before Morrow was able to claim the lead.

One of the yellow flags in this race came as Ron Bolin Jr. and Justin Boots got hooked together at the top of the track. This closed the field behind Morrow for the restart.

Another yellow flew as Craig Wood got turned sideways on one end of the track and Bolin on the other end. Morrow was once again in the lead for the restart.

Morrow lead this race start to finish to claim his third win of the season.

Street Stock heat race winners were Jerry Morgan of Fort Scott and Denny Chrisenbery of Bronaugh.

After two tries the Feature was underway with Chrisenbery in the lead. Chrisenbery had built up a good lead when Ron Rector went spinning into the tires bringing out the yellow flag and closing the field behind Chrisenbery for the restart.

Another yellow flew as Chris Rodabaugh and Robby Love got together and once again Chrisenbery was in the lead for the restart. Craig Spencer was all over the back bumper of Chrisenbery but couldn't get around as Chrisenbery claimed the win, his third of the season.

Factory Stock heat race winners were Vince Barker of Nevada and Tiny Joles of Fort Scott.

Joles got the lead at the start of the Feature. He got sideways in the corner, which allowed Keith Simmons to gain the lead. Simmons maintained the lead and collected the win, his fourth of the season.

Mini Stock heat race winners were John Porter and Brian Beard both from Liberal.

Porter got the lead at the start of the Feature. Melvin Baxter had just gained the lead when a yellow flew as Frank Ramsey went spinning and Chip More bounced off the wall and ended up in the infield. This placed Porter back in the lead for the restart.

Lloyd Whisler, Mark Godsey and Andy Hogan got together sending Godsey sideways into Hogan and then Godsey's car rolled ending up on it's top. This brought out the red flag so the track could be cleared.

Porter was in the lead for the restart. Just as the white flag was about to be displayed Baxter claimed the lead and went on to claim the win, his third of the season.
