Bill McDowell

Bill McDowell, 78, Nevada, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin, following a short illness. He was born May 3, 1926, in Bourbon County, Kan., to Warner Otis McDowell and Augusta Jane VanLoon McDowell. He married Mona D. Emery on May 4, 1950, in Bentonville, Ark., and she survives of the home.

Bill was a lifelong resident of Vernon County. He attended Nevada Schools. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953 in Iceland during the Korean Conflict. Bill was a cattleman and horseman all his life. He was a member of the VFW Post 2175, Nevada.

Survivors in addition to his wife, Mona, include two daughters, Janie Ephland and her husband, David, Arlington, Texas, Rita McCoy and her husband, Don, Nevada; four grandchildren, Andrew Ephland. Arlington, Texas, Bailey Ephland, Arlington, Texas, Matthew McCoy, Nevada, and Abby McCoy, Nevada; two sisters, Doris Cullor and Eva Capelle, both of Fort Scott, Kan; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Leon and Betty Emery, Deerfield; numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, with the Rev. Bill Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Deerfield Cemetery, Deerfield. Friends may call now and until the hour of service at the funeral home.

Deaths

Janet Ann Platt

Janet Ann Platt, 64, Nevada, died Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, at Christian Health Care in Nevada, following a brief illness. She was born Jan. 26, 1940, in Kansas City, Mo., to Arthur Sebastian Wegerer and Jeanette Nayden Samuels Wegerer.

She was born in Kansas City and raised in Nevada and spent virtually her entire life here. She worked for 26 years as a medical transcriptionist, retiring in 2003.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Dale Platt, Australia, and Steven Craig Platt, Pennsylvania; one daughter, Michelle Gast, Nevada; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; father, Arthur Wegerer, Nevada; one sister, Judy Mulqueen, Milwaukee, Wisc.; several nieces and nephews.

Following cremation there will be a family visitation from 4-5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 8, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.
