Effie E. Volkland

Effie E. Volkland, of Nevada, Mo., was born Nov. 10, 1916, in Pauls Valley, Okla., the daughter of Frank Darnell and Birdie Lee (Mays). She passed away on Saturday, Feb. 25, at Moore-Few Care Center at 89 years of age.

She was united in marriage to Phil Volkland in 1939, in Bushton, Kan., and he preceded her in death in 1966. Effie attended and earned degrees at the University of Kansas, Pittsburg State University and Kansas State University. Effie arrived in Nevada, in the early 1970s. She was employed by the Nevada R-5 school district in which she provided speech therapy for elementary students. The students knew her best by the red van that was her classroom. Mrs. Volkland was a member of the United Methodist Church of Nevada for over 25 years and was also a member of the Elizabeth Carey Chapter of the DAR and belonged to P.E.O.

Survivors include one son, Douglas Volkland of Great Bend, Kan.; two daughters, Jeannie Huebner of Jacksonville, Fla., and Jacqueline Gumer of Quartz Hill, Calif. She also has 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren of which she was a great influence to and loved her whole life. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 3, at 2 p.m., at the United Methodist Church in Nevada, with the Rev. Ralph Clark officiating. Burial will follow in Moore Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m., Thursday, at Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
