LaMerna Avanell (Attebery) Wood

LaMerna Avanell (Attebery) Wood, 88, of rural Nevada, died Thursday, March 23, 2006, at Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada following a lengthy illness. She was born near Akron, Colo., on April 22, 1917, to Robert Attebery and Elsie May VanMeter Attebery. On June 22, 1941, she was married to Finis Wood in Kansas City, Mo., and he survives.

LaMerna graduated from Rockville High School in 1935, and was employed as a waitress at Wood's Cafe in Nevada. She lived most of her adult life in, and near Nevada. LaMerna was a cook and cafeteria manager for the Nevada R-5 schools for 12 years and later worked in the dietary department at the Nevada state school and hospital for 15 years retiring in 1979. She was a member of the Church of Christ, Nevada Garden Club, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Her hobbies included sewing, quilting, crocheting, knitting, gardening and making hooked rugs.

Survivors in addition to her husband Finis include one son, Byron Wood and his wife, LaDonna of Pleasant Hill, Mo.; one daughter, Phyllis Clayton and her husband, Gene of Springfield, Mo.; four grandchildren, Sherry Mason and her husband Doug, Randy Clayton and his wife, Laura of Springfield, Darren Wood, Little Rock, Ark., Brandon Wood, Nashville, Tenn.; and three great-grandchildren, Matthew, Emily and Lauren Clayton, Springfield. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Amel, Vaughn. and Vincil Attebery, and one sister, Alene Tally.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., on Monday, March 27, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park, Nevada. Friends may call now and until the hour of service and the family receives friends 4-5 p.m., on Sunday.

Memorials are suggested to the McGennis Youth Center or Moss House in care of Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.
