Time for input short for city's budget

Thursday, December 7, 2006

The Nevada City Council did the right thing to postpone a budget hearing in order to comply with rules aimed at keeping the public informed. It seems the city's charter, though all too often wielded as a weapon rather than as a tool to promote fair and open government in Nevada, is at last getting a nod from the council.

Tuesday night, a scheduled budget hearing was postponed because a public notice didn't include mention of how and where citizens could view the budget proposal -- a necessary posting under the city's charter.

The oversight did, however, cost the city valuable time -- the budget is to be approved by the end of this month. Now this council must move ahead quickly in order to meet charter's deadline of passing the budget by then, and opportunities for public discussion seem to be dwindling.

It is up to the people to take it upon themselves to review the budget.

It's your money.

Now is the time to let the city council know your views on how it is being spent.
