Hearl Lee Scism, 67, of Nevada, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, at his home in Nevada following a sudden illness. He was born Nov. 1, 1940, in Siloam Springs, Ark., to Ray Edward Scism and Nancy Margaret Biby Scism. He married Barbara Williams on July 24, 1959, in Nevada.

Hearl was born in Siloam Springs, Ark., and came to Vernon County at a young age. He made his living in a variety of pursuits including a bread delivery person, and as owner/operator of the 54 Cafe and PaPa's Convenience Store. Hearl was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, Elks Lodge Post No. 564 and the Eagles Lodge Post No. 3770. He was an avid football fan and loved spending time at the family farm. He loved his children and grandchildren very much.

Survivors include three daughters, Tearl Edwards and her husband Jim, of Nevada. Shearl Scism, of Nevada, and Vicki Ast and her husband Steve, of Nevada; five grandchildren, Ashley Edwards, of Joplin, Savanah Coffman, Mallorie Ast, Trey Ast, and Nathan Ast, all of Nevada; one great-grandson, Bryan Mendez, of Nevada; three brothers, Dale E. Scism and his wife Nancy, Ray Dean Scism and his wife LuCreta, and Larry G. Scism and his wife Robin, all of Nevada; two sisters, Shirley Fae Bear and her husband Ralph, of Shawnee, Kan., and Sandra Sue Clark and her husband Frank, of Dalgren, Ill.; former wife and friend, Barbara Erwin, of Nevada, and numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends. he was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Kenneth D. Scism, Jearl Scism and an infant brother, Gale DeWayne Scism; and three sisters Margaret Rae Harless, Beverly Kay Swait and Neverly Joy Scism.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, at Ferry Funeral Home, in Nevada, with Ray Dean Scism officiating. Interment will follow in Olive Branch Cemetery, in Milo, Mo. Friends may call now and until the hour of service and the family receives friends from 7-8 p.m., Thursday Feb. 7, at the funeral home.

Memorials may be given to the Hearl L. Scism Scholarship Fund in care of Ferry Funeral Home.
