Nellie Ruth Beaver, 97, of Fort Scott, died Friday, June 13, 2008. She was born July 5, 1910 in Uniontown, Kan., the daughter of John Thomas "J.T." and Hallie (Stevens) Stone. She married James L. Beaver ,April 22, 1978, in Kansas City, Mo. He preceded her in death March 21, 2002.

Nellie attended Fort Scott High School and Mercy Hospital Nurses' Training, and then worked as a registered nurse at Mercy Hospital for a time before moving to the Kansas City area in 1947. She returned to Fort Scott in September of 1990.

She was a former member of the Westminster Congregational Church in Kansas City, Mo., and a current member of the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Scott. She was a past member of the National and of the Kansas and Missouri Nurses Associations, and the American Business Women Association. She enjoyed needlework, playing cards, and gardening. She traveled extensively from 1951 until moving back to Fort Scott, and has been to Alaska, Canada, all over the United States, including Washington D.C., all four of the Scandinavian nations, Europe, and St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.

She is survived by: a sister, Hazel Burt of Uniontown, Kan.; five nieces, a great-niece, and a great-nephew; and special friends, May Viles and Joan Cox, both of Fort Scott. In addition to her husband, James, she was preceded in death by her parents, a brother; Ernest L. Stone, an infant brother, and two sisters; Ethel Miller, and Gladys Nichols.

The Rev. Steve MacArthur will conduct funeral services 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 17, at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Paint Creek Marion Cemetery.
