Letter to the Editor

Hazel Gordon and the Sept. 8 election

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

Dear Editor:

This letter is regarding a couple of events that affected my life this past week and I am very sorry about both incidents. First of all I (we) all lost a very fine woman in Hazel Gordon this past week; I had the privilege to grow up across the street from the Gordons in the 700 block of West Walnut Street.

She was also very cordial to me and to my family, she and her late husband Paul would socialize occasionally with my parents Ed and Martha David. There are numerous things that I can still see Hazel doing; following her son Mark's athletic career both in Nevada and his college playing days. Mark was one of a kind, in that he made the varsity teams in both football and basketball. I even believe he might have even participated in the track program as well, he was one dedicated athlete, but he did not do any of this for personal gain or recognition, he did it for the TEAM, because it meant more to him to win as a sports family.

I was able to talk with Mark prior to Hazel's funeral on Tuesday as I had kind of lost track of her location. He told me that they had to put her in an assisted living facility and then at our Barone's Center, which he told me she loved, even though she had lost her eyesight. Mark told me that he would visit often as he could -- he and his family now live in Georgia -- and was there as Hazel departed from her present life. Now she will be able to once again see her husband Paul, my mother and father, and all of her old friends that had already left to be in that better place. God bless you Hazel, I will miss you as much as my own mother and father.

The other thing that I must comment about is on the election on Tuesday, I am in no way bitter about the outcome. What really bothers me is the turn out; "381" citizens who voted out of a possible 4,000 registered voters. I personally talked to well over 200 citizens, however some just lived outside our city limits, but I talked to one young lady prior to the election at the YMCA and I do hope she performed one of our most valuable rights -- THE RIGHT TO VOTE.

I want thank the 83 people who voted for me and congratulate the top four vote getters, however, we all must remember there are some very important issues facing our council and the citizens of Nevada. So in closing, I am asking, just as Mr. Carpenter asked in his column, please go vote in November and may the best man or women win.

I hope that this will make the paper.

Regards,

Rick David
