Glenn McKinnis Smith, lifelong resident of Uniontown, will celebrate his 90th birthday on Aug. 19. Those wishing to send cards may send them to Box 124, Uniontown, KS 66779. Friends and relatives are also invited to share some birthday cake and ice cream on Aug. 15 at the United Methodist Church in Uniontown from 2 to 4 p.m. No gifts, just the pleasure of your presence.

Glenn attended Kansas State University and earned an electrical engineering degree. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as the Radio Team Chief of the 3127th Signal Service Company in the Phillippines for the duration of the war. Returning from the war, he married Ethel Berry of Fort Scott, and they made their home in Uniontown, where Glenn joined his father, Charles Smith, in running Smith's Standard Service Station.

Glenn soon became the fix-it man of the area, working on electrical and mechanical problems. This became his second job. He was often paid with gifts of food and produce. Glenn has served the city of Uniontown in the capacity of Mayor, Councilman, Fire Chief, City Engineer, District 70 School Board Member, Sunday School Superintendent of the Uniontown United Methodist Church, member of the Free Masons and member and Worthy Patron of Mary A. Hepler Chapter No. 434 Order of the Eastern Star.

During a marriage of 61 1/2 years, Glenn and Ethel raised three children: Charles, Glenda, and Richard. He currently has 8 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He is pictured with his great-grandson Darian Kelly of Girard.
