Opal Lorene (Collins) Prouty

Opal L. Prouty, 95, of Independence, Mo., passed away Jan. 1, 2011, at the Villages of Jackson Creek. Mrs. Prouty was born March 18, 1915, in Dederick, Mo., to Wesley and Mabel (Hawkins) Collins. She taught in rural schools of Missouri and in the Nevada, Mo., and Independence, Mo., public schools, retiring in 1980. She had lived in the Independence area for 53 years and was a member of Maywood Baptist Church.

Mrs. Prouty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Scott Prouty in 1985; her siblings, Marshall Collins, Gladys Haynes and Wilma Geller. She is survived by two daughters, Sharon Knabe and Myrna (Charles) McCain; one brother, James Elmer Collins; one sister, Mildred (Harold) Kinghorn; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held from 9-10 a.m., followed by a 10 a.m. service on Wednesday, Jan. 5, at the Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington Ave., Independence, Mo. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Vernon County, Mo.
