John Lewiston Winscott

John Lewiston Winscott, 71, Independence, Mo., passed away Wednesday, March 7, 2012. John was born Jan. 15, 1941, in Nevada, Mo., the son of Roy Levi and Nellie Alberta (Allen) Winscott. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

John retired in 1991 from the General Motors Leeds plant and was a member of the UAW Local No. 93. He later worked for the Midwest Genealogy Center in Independence. John also enjoyed woodworking and genealogy research which coordinated with his love of family. He was preceded in death by his son, Cary Winscott, in 2008; sisters, Lil Kersten, Blanche Brown and Della Baxter; and his parents.

Survivors include his son, Troy Winscott; grandson, Ryan Sishc; brother, Don "Bud" Winscott; sister, Hazel Winscott; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m., Sunday, March 11, at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m., Monday, March 12, at Fort Scott National Cemetery with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Three Rivers Hospice.
