Alberta Beatrice Bates

Alberta Beatrice Bates, 80, Independence, Mo., passed away on Monday, May 7, 2012, at her home. She was born Dec. 31, 1931, in Schell City, Mo., to Other T. Cox and Inez Sarah Malcolm Cox Raines.

Alberta grew up in Missouri where she attended school. She went to Illinois in 1947 where she met Kenneth L. Bates and they were married in 1949. They moved to the Kansas City area in 1950. Alberta worked as a secretary for several companies in the Kansas City area until her retirement in 1990.

Survivors include three children, Stephen Bates, Nevada, Michael Bates and his wife, Susan, Lake Lotawana, Mo., and Valerie Shoopman and her husband, Keith, Belton, Mo.; two grandsons, Corey Shoopman, Belton, Mo., Bret Shoopman, Lakewood, Colo.; and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and sisters.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, May 24, at Moore Cemetery, Nevada. Friends and family are welcome to meet at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada, to congregate and proceed together to Moore Cemetery for the service. Friends and family may call now and until the hour of service at the funeral home.
