Helen R. Metcalf, 92, Emporia, and formerly of Fort Scott, passed away Thursday, Aug. 2, 2012, at the Emporia Presbyterian Manor.

Helen Rosella Elder, the daughter of Charles and Bessie (Kinion) Elder, was born in Woodson, Kan., on March 23, 1920. She married Otis Metcalf at Fort Scott on Dec. 22, 1941. He died in June of 1960.

Surviving family members include sons, Dale (Kay), of Columbia, Mo., and Dwight (Linda), of Emporia, Kan.; daughter, Carolyn Mann, Wichita; a brother, Cleo Elder, Osborne, Kan.; as well as 10 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Kenneth, Verlin, Merlin, Gene and Joe Elder; and sisters, Mary Rehor and Blanche Myers.

Mrs. Metcalf was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Fort Scott, Kan., and the United Presbyterian Women of the church. She worked as a dietician at Mercy Hospital, and also worked for Key Work Clothes, and as head cook at the middle school in Fort Scott.

The family will receive friends at the First Presbyterian Church, Fort Scott, at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 7. A graveside service will be held in the Memory Gardens of Bourbon County at 1 p.m., that afternoon. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Jared Witt, First Presbyterian Church, Fort Scott.

A memorial has been established for the Jones Health Care Center of the Emporia Presbyterian Manor, with contributions sent in care of the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, P.O. Box 175, Emporia, KS 66801.
