Wayne L. Race

Wayne L. Race, 90, Nevada, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at Moore-Few Care Center, in Nevada, following a brief illness. He was born Nov. 15, 1922, in Independence, Mo., to Albert Lee Race and Marvel Beatrice Emvrey Race. He was married to Elizabeth Hiatt. Later, he married Maxine Raney in 1974 in Kansas City, Mo., and she preceded him in death on Jan. 28, 2008.

Wayne grew up in Independence. Following high school, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Africa, Italy, France, and Germany. He came back to Kansas City and worked for a time for Rival Company before going to work for Lake City Steel until his retirement. He had lived in Nevada since 1998.

Survivors include one son, Mark Race and his wife, Twana, Independence; one daughter, April Leffler, Nevada; three grandchildren, Amy Heller, Milo, Ryan Race, Burlington, Iowa, and Chris Race, Nevada; six great-grandchildren; and one brother, Dale Race, Warsaw, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and one brother, Garner Race.

Funeral services with military honors will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, March 4, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, with the Rev. Jim Davis officiating. Friends may call now and until the hour of service at the funeral home.
