Dogs must be leashed in city parks

Wednesday, July 10, 2013

If you take your dogs to a city park for exercise, the city now requires you to have your dog on a leash while in the parks and dogs are prohibited in playground areas of the parks.

The Nevada City Council unanimously approved during its meeting Tuesday the second reading of a general ordinance requiring dogs to be on a leash while in city parks. The council voted 4-0, with council member Jayne Novak excused from the meeting.

The Nevada Parks Board brought the matter before the city council and proposed the ordinance after receiving numerous complaints from people who were concerned about their safety with dogs running lose in the parks.

Council member Lance Christie said he understood people letting their dogs out to run and he would like to see the parks board look at some options for dog owners.

"I think we do need a leash law for the city," Christie said.
