Maxine Urena

Maxine Urena, 73, of Nevada, Mo., passed away on Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at Freeman Hospital West, in Joplin, Mo. She was born on Dec. 23, 1940, in Avant, Okla., to Murray M. Mason and Ruby Tabor Mason.

Maxine came to rural Nevada with her family at age 9. She graduated from Nevada High School in 1959, then began working for Vernon County Family Services the summer of 1959, where she worked until she retired in 1995. She enjoyed gardening, dancing and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters, Judy Moore and her husband, Carl, and Jeanne Burrus, both of Nevada; four grandchildren, Bradley Moore, C.J. Moore, Danielle Mosher and Mallorree Beers; three great-grandchildren, Aidan Moore, Brantley Stroud and Brynner Stroud; her longtime companion, Richard "Oakie" Urena; two sisters, Lois Tyer and Shirley Meeks, both of Nevada; three brothers, Garland Mason, Nevada, Bobby Mason, Amarillo, Texas, and Johnny Mason, Lakin, Kan.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five brothers; one sister; and one great-grandson, Conner Mosher.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m., today, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, with the Rev. Terry Mosher officiating. Interment will follow at Moore Cemetery, Nevada. The family received friends from 7-8 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 28, at the funeral home.
