Phyllis Jean Baucom

Phyllis Jean Baucom, 87, formerly of Nevada, passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2014, in Lee's Summit, Mo., after a lengthy illness. Phyllis was born April 18, 1927, in Great Bend, Kan., to Asa L. Wood and May Dunn Wood. She was united in marriage to Winston Lee Baucom on May 17, 1947, in Nevada, Mo., and he survives of the home.

Phyllis, along with her family, came to Nevada at a young age. She attended Nevada R-5 schools, graduating from Nevada High School Class of 1945. Phyllis worked in the Vernon County Clerk's Office for a number of years then later worked for Richardson's Office Supply until her retirement. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Nevada and the American Legion. Phyllis was also active for a number of years in the Democratic Party. She has resided in Lee's Summit for the last six months.

In addition to her husband, Winston, survivors include two daughters, Kerry Tait, Springfield, Mo., and Marylynn Elkin and her husband, Larry, Lee's Summit; five grandchildren, Scott Williams and his wife, Kellie, Colorado Springs, Colo., Brad Elkin and his wife, Jami, St. Louis, Mo., Christopher Elkin, St. Paul, Minn., John Elkin and his wife, Hilarie, Lee's Summit, and Emily Gilbert and her husband, Ryan, Lee's Summit; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen LaGuire, and Mary Hunt; one brother, Jim Wood; and one grandson, Robert Williams

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 3, at Ferry Funeral Home, in Nevada, with the Rev. Hubert Fox officiating. Committal service will follow in Newton Burial Park, Nevada. Family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., prior to the service at the funeral home.

Contributions may be made in her memory to American Diabetes association in care of Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada.
