Harold Leon Shumaker Sr.

Harold Leon Shumaker Sr., 91, a long-time resident of Nevada went to be with his Lord Jesus Tuesday, June 10, 2014, after a long struggle from the aftermaths of pancreatitis and a broken hip. Even in immense pain, his special kindness and warmth showed through to all. We miss him so very much and are so very blessed by having known him.

Harold was born on June 11, 1922, to long-time residents of Vernon County Watson Henry and Lettie Mae (Hunter) Shumaker, who preceded him in death: Watson in 1971 and Lettie Mae in 1973. Harold also lost two brothers, Franklin Andrew, of Carthage, Mo., in 1979, and Henry Junior, of Portland, Ore., in 1988, and a sister, Carrie Maude Shumaker (Loomer) in 2011. Harold was married to Virginia Lucille Gowin on Jan. 1, 1941, in Nevada, Mo., in a double ring ceremony with his sister, Mildred Marie and Virginia Lucille's brother, Glenn Franklin Gowin.

Harold served in World War II in the United States Army from 1943-46 and received two purple hearts after being wounded in Germany. He was a member of the Antioch Christian Church just north of Nevada. His special love was farming, but he also worked as a psychiatric aide at the Nevada Habilitation Center and Nevada State Hospital for 30 years. He retired in 1984.

Survivors include his loving wife of more than 72 years, Virginia Lucille, of the home; four sons, Harold Leon Shumaker Jr. and his wife, Margaret, Henry Emmett Shumaker and his wife, Polly, Ralph Edward Shumaker and his wife, Sandi, and Raymond Lee Shumaker and his wife, Brenda; his daughter, May Hutchison and her husband, Don, all of Nevada; three sisters, Eula Faye Shumaker, of Westminster, Calif., currently residing in the Barone Care Center, Mildred Marie (Gowin) Shumaker, of Baldwin Park, Calif., and Wilma Maxine (Hartsell) Shumaker, of Nevada; grandchildren, Clarissa McBride and her husband, Braden, Alicia Wolfe and her husband, Kevin, Ryan Shumaker and his wife, Ashley, Henry Shumaker Jr., Karen Foster, Brenda Larsen and her husband, John, Ralph (Eddie) Shumaker Jr., Kelly Shumaker, John Shumaker and his wife, Tracy, Amber Hale and her husband, Chris, Michelle Kimmell and her husband, Andrew, Mike Hutchison and his wife, Pam, Kristi Goddard and her husband, Chris, and Brandi Mogan (Rader); and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 13, at Ferry Funeral Home, in Nevada, with Brother Ray Dean Scism officiating. Interment will follow in the Antioch Cemetery, Nevada. Friends may call from now until the hour of service and family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., prior to the service.
