Marjorie Jane Ness, 75, of Sheldon, Mo., passed from this life Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014, at Freeman West Hospital, in Joplin. She was born Feb. 23, 1939, in Madison, S.D., the daughter of Thomas and Margaret (Meyer) Orton. On May 29, 1958, she was united in marriage to Dwight Wallace Ness and he preceded her in death on July 6, 2005. Their union was blessed with four children.

Marjorie grew up in Madison and that was also where she attended school. She met and married Dwight while in South Dakota and the couple made the Madison area their home until 1965, when they relocated to Missouri to be near family. They settled in the Moundville area then, for the past several years, have lived in Sheldon.

Marjorie worked in the business office of the state hospital for 30 years before her retirement. She was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church, in Sheldon, a Sheldon Lions Club member, and was president of the Sheldon Jolly Seniors. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, bowling, crocheting, and cooking and baking. But her most cherished times were spent with her family, sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren -- they were the loves of her life.

Survivors include her sons, Don Ness and Deanna, of Nevada, and Steve Ness and Erin, of Lamar; grandchildren, Bethany Stewart and Geoff, Brant Ness and Lora, Steven Ness, and Amber Ness; great-grandchildren, Grady and Sophie Stewart; brothers, Tom, Wayne, and Rich Orton; and sister, Ada Coffee. Aside from her husband, Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, John and Bob; sisters, Helen and Mary Lou; her daughter, Lori; and her son, Daniel.

Funeral services for Marjorie Jane Ness will be held at 9 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 23, at Ferry Funeral Home, in Nevada. Interment will follow in the Deerfield Cemetery, in Deerfield. Visitation is scheduled just prior to the service from 8 to 9 a.m., at the funeral home.
