Dora Jane Garrett

Wednesday, April 29, 2015

Dora Jane Garrett, 73, of Nevada, Mo., passed from this life Monday, April 27, 2015, at Barton County Memorial Hospital, in Lamar. She was born April 21, 1942, in Yakima, Wash., the daughter of Everett Earnest and Anna Mary (Atherton) Wood.

At the age of six, Dora along with her family, moved to Missouri to be near family. She attended rural country schools in this area during her elementary years and graduated with the El Dorado Springs Class of 1961. She was united in marriage to Leonard Garrett and together they became the parents of four children, making their home in the Walker area. With the exception of a few years spent in Kansas City where she worked at Arrow Drapery, most of her life was spent in Vernon and Cedar counties. Her employment years included working at Nellie Don, Dunbrooke, Pizza Hut and many years at the 54 Café. She also worked for several years as a Dietary Supervisor at Nevada Regional Medical Center retiring from there in 2007.

When time allowed she enjoyed sewing, quilting, flowers, crocheting and embroidery, and puzzles. She tried to never miss a bus trip to Down Stream Casino. Her family -- children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her greatest loves. But she always held a spot in her heart for animals of any kind and spent countless hours with her best friend and faithful dog -- Natalie.

Those left to mourn her passing include her children, Anna Nichols of Lamar, Victor Garrett and wife, Tara, of Walker, Sherry Garrett of El Dorado Springs, and Tony Garrett and wife, Davola, of Nevada; grandchildren, Mike Nichols, Sarah Post, Alex Garrett, Kolby Garrett, Jeremy Garrett, and Kyla Guss; great-grandchildren, Emilie Lawrence, Colton Lawrence, and Makenzie Post; sister-in-law, Helen Wood of Walker; and nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Dora was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Bill Wood, Jerry Wood, and Mina Bray.

A memorial service for Dora Jane Garrett is scheduled for 6 p.m., Thursday, April 30, at Ferry Funeral Home, in Nevada, with the Rev. Mark Mitchell officiating. Private burial to follow at a later date.

Memorials in her memory may be made to Vernon County People for Pets or Mount Vernon Cemetery in care of Ferry Funeral Home.
