Margret Louise "Peggy" Payne

Margret Louise "Peggy" Payne, 90, of Nevada, Mo., passed away Sept. 21, 2015, at her daughter's home in Carthage. She was born May 7, 1925, on a farm near St. Francis, Kan., the daughter of William Gimmel and Mary (Cavanaugh) Syme. On June 16, 1946, she was united in marriage to Troy Edward Payne and he preceded her in death on Feb. 11, 2002.

Margret attended school in St. Francis graduating with the Class of 1942. After she and Troy were married they lived for a time in Gardner then moved to Kansas City, Kan. They were living in the metro area during the flood of 1951 in an upstairs apartment where the water rose to the top of the windows, an unforgettable time for both of them. She worked for Lee's while living in that area.

Shortly after the birth of their first daughter, they relocated to Harrison, Ark., where Margret began employment with O'Berman's Garment Factory. Their second daughter was born while they lived in Arkansas. The family moved to Nevada so the girls could attend Fort Scott Bible School. While living in this area Margret worked at Nelly Don/Jr. House for 24 years, until her retirement in 1989. She then worked part time for West Central. She cared for both her husband, Troy, and daughter, Patricia, during each of their illnesses.

Margret was a longtime member of the Deerfield Church of God (Holiness) who loved her church and spent much time reading her Bible. She always kept a close eye on her neighbor's wellbeing, and always enjoyed hummingbirds. Her greatest joy was her family, especially spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughter, Janice Payne, of Carthage; grandchildren, Michelle Johnson, Albertville, Minn., Terrence Loudermilk and wife, Tracy, of Milo, Melissa Williams and husband, Daniel, of Carthage, and Melinda Stevenson and boyfriend, Kevin Burgess, of Stott's City; great-grandchildren, Chantel Hogan, Kimberlee and Tanner Hogan, Brayden, Trevyn, Rheagan, and Addison Williams, Auszrah and Dayton Stevenson, and Kyler Burgess; and many nieces, nephews, other extended family members, and friends. Aside from her husband Troy, Margret was preceded in death by her parents; brother, John Syme; sisters, Addie Pursley and Barbara Oshel; and her beloved daughter, Patricia.

Funeral services are scheduled at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Sept. 25, at Ferry Funeral Home, in Nevada, with the Rev. Bill Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Moore Cemetery, in Nevada. Visitation is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 24, at Ferry Funeral Home.
