V.H. Gulliford, 91, resident of Nevada, Mo., died Sunday, April 3, 2016, at the KU Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan. He was born on Dec. 6, 1924, in Moundville, Mo., the son of Edward and Alta Janes Gulliford. He married Hazel Marie Bley on April 30, 1947, in Fort Scott, Kan. He served in the U.S. Army in Japan and the Philippines. V.H. was a lifelong farmer and rancher. He was an experienced horseman, using them in his day to day operations. He was always willing to help family and neighbors whenever needed. He loved spending time with his family. He was a member of the Clayton Christian Church and the Nevada American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel, of the home; a daughter, Nancy K. Gulliford, whom they adopted at six months of age; a brother, Richard Gulliford, Monett, Mo.; a sister-in-law, Charlene Bley Widmar, whom they raised from age nine; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Gulliford; and a sister, Thelma Armsworthy.

Pastor Roger Beach will conduct funeral services at 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 11, at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the Memory Gardens Cemetery, Fort Scott. Military honors will be provided by the U.S. Army Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time at the Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Vernon County Cancer Society, which may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, P.O. Box 347, 201 S. Main, Fort Scott, Kan., 66701.
