NHS wrestling opens season at Steve Leslie invite

The Nevada High School wrestling team opened its season Saturday at the Steve Leslie Invitational hosted by Pleasant Hill High School.

The Tigers finished in seventh out of 14 varsity teams. The top three team finishes were Chillicothe, Kirksville and Pleasant Hill.

"We were led by our two seniors, Jacob Johnson and Colton Shrewsbury,"First-year NHS wrestling coach David Hawks said. "Johnson finished in third place and Shrewsbury finished in fourth place, also picking up his 100th career win over the weekend. And Coletan Shepard had a good weekend finishing in fourth place."

* 106 pound weight class: Nevada's Brock Marquardt (5-3 record) placed fifth and scored 42.50 team points. In fifth-place match, Marquardt won by tech fall over Gabe Arreguin (Shawnee Mission NW) 4-4 (TF-1.5 4:00 (16-1).
