Even though only in its second year, the success of Nevada Parks and Recreation’s Flannel Fest event held on Saturday may be an indication that the free festival has potential for growth, which is what the department is hoping. The team is already making plans for next year and brainstorming ideas for possible future attractions.

Recreational Services Manager Tera McFarland reported a crowd of approximately 1000 at noon, which surpassed the inaugural event’s all-day tally last year. She said the new attraction, Dock Dogs, was a huge success, as were the chainsaw carving and lumberjacks. Also according to McFarland, each attraction expressed interest in returning next year due to the friendliness and warm reception by those in attendance.

“We had 50 volunteers that helped us out for the event,” she continued. “Dock Dogs finished their competition after the rain because they were in competition to qualify for nationals. Jason Morton with Eagle Ridge Chainsaw carving did an excellent job.”

Smaller carvings from Flannel Fest will be sold through a silent auction to benefit the programs provided by Nevada’s Parks and Recreation.

The big bear carved by Morton during the event still stands in Marmaduke Park, but there is a problem – he (or she) has no name. To remedy this, they are having a naming contest, allowing members of the community to go to the Community Center through November 16 to enter a proposed name.

“He also donated the pieces he cut on Saturday to Parks and Recreation to be auctioned off in order to help with recreation programs,” she added.

The smaller carvings will soon be on display at the Community Center and a silent auction held to raise money for programs. The deadline to enter bids is November 16th at 3 p.m. Parks and Recreations can be followed on Facebook for more details.
