Approximately 230 fourth graders from Nevada and Vernon County schools spent Thursday learning about the diverse history of the county and midwest Missouri.

Hosted by the Vernon County Historical Society, "Missouri History Day" serves to teach the students a historical overview of the area. According to Bushwhacker Museum Coordinator Will Tollerton, the history day began in 2001 — over 20 years ago. However, the event took two years off during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tollerton noted that topics during the day's events included western trails, 19th century music, one-room school houses, old-time kids' games, Osage Indian tribe, and more.

There were a total of nine stations that the students rotated through and these included the following:

• "Wagons Ho! Pioneers of the Prairies," which was presented by Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm.

• "Old Time Fun & Games," which was presented by Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm.

• "Welcome to Your New Home: Bushwhacker Jail and Sheriff's Home," which was presented by Vernon County Historical Society Volunteers.

• "Laundry & Learning: The Life of George Washington Carver," which was presented by George Washington Carver National Monument.

• "Marching & Drilling: A Civil War Soldier's Life," which was presented by Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm.

• "The Three Rs: Readin' Ritin' & 'Rithmatic/One-Room School House," which was presented by Jane Ann Hancock and Peggy Pyle.

• Walmart of the Plains: The American Bison," which was presented by Beth Bazal of the Truman Birthplace State Historic Site.

• "Prairies of Southwest Missouri," which was presented by Carol Davit of the Missouri Prairie Foundation.

• "Folk Music," which was presented by David Prickett.

Hosted by the Vernon County Historical Society, "Missouri History Day" had generous assistance from U.S. National Park Service; Division of Missouri State Parks; Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop Historic Site; and Missouri Prairie Foundation.
