Charles Vernon Thompson

Charles Vernon Thompson, of Walker, Mo., passed away Sunday, May 14, at his home. Charles was preceded in death by his parents Vernon V. And Dorothy Spencer Thompson and his wife Barbara Moseley Thompson. He is survived by his children Robert M. Thompson and wife Cindy, Dana Thompson Cavener and husband Greg and Bradley V. Thompson and wife Lori. Grandchildren include: Cara Hoover (Justin), Spencer Thompson (Lauren), David Cavener (Liz), Kathryn Cavener Hicks (Logan), Margaret Cavener, Nash Smith, Daven Cowan (Drew) and Matthew Thompson. Charles also adored his great-grandchildren: Burkley and Avery Hoover, Rhett, Emerson, Charles and Harrison Thompson, Vivian and Brooks Cavener and Graham Hicks. Judy Dahmer of the home was his cherished companion and life-long friend.

Charles was born June 13, 1936, in Nevada, Mo., and grew up on his parent’s farm west of Walker and was an active participant in farming with his father. He graduated salutatorian of Walker High School and attended Fort Scott Community College for a year after which he married his high school sweetheart Barbara Moseley in 1955 and they began their life together as a farm family. He served in the Missouri Army National Guard at Camp Clark.

In addition to farming, Charles served for a time as the President of the Farmer’s Bank of Walker. He was a member of the Nevada/Vernon County Chamber of Commerce Board, Walker R-IV School Board, and VC Water District #5 Board. He served as President of Vernon County Farm Bureau and the Vernon County Extension Council and as officers and on the boards of the Vernon County Health Department and the NRMC Foundation.

He was a 4-H leader and an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church. He loved reading and studying World War II military history and loved telling stories of history to his kids and grandkids.

Charles received many honorariums in his life including: Missouri Conservation Award, KC Chamber of Commerce Recognition, Missouri State Farm Management Award, Missouri State Farm Family Award, Vernon County Chamber of Commerce Award as well as the outstanding service award from the Nevada/Vernon County Chamber of Commerce.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Nevada Country Club, former member of Nevada Rotary, Nevada Elks and spent many pleasant evenings with his Rowdy Bunch dinner friends.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday, May 18, at the First Presbyterian Church, in Nevada, with the Rev. Laura Agee officiating. Private burial will follow. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park, in Nevada. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, at Ferry Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Nevada or the Vernon County Health Department.
