The Northeast Vernon County (NEVC) School board Meeting was called to order by President David Bruce on Friday morning, Nov. 17. After the board approved the agenda and the minutes from last month’s meeting, the board went into discussing financials. Some of the board members questioned some of the bills, and after Superintendent Chris Holcomb explained them in detail, the board approved of the financials and to pay the bills.

Holcomb advised there will be two openings to fill in April’s election for the school board. He stated that he would be posting the filing dates in the newspaper. The board approved his report. Holcomb asked the board to approve the senior trip. He said the senior class would like to go to Destine, Fla., and the trip will cost about $9,600. The board approved the request.

The board accepted and approved David Diggins’ bid to replace the old gym floor in the commons area at the high school. Diggins’ will start the project on May 10 and put in a color concrete floor in the area.

Holcomb gave Elementary Principal Eric Rhodes’ report. He said elementary students raised over $1,600 with their fundraiser, and the fifth grade brought in the most money. He said the school’s attendance is at 94%. There was successful attendance for the Parent/Teacher Conferences, and he read the names of the students that received “Student of the Week” awards for the month of October.

Holcomb recognized the staff who put on a Thanksgiving lunch for the students.

The board approved of the report.

Holcomb gave High School Principal John Lawrence’s report. He said high school attendance is also at 94%. He said there was a low attendance for the Parent/Teacher Conferences.

Holcomb listed off the names of the students who made the A/B Honor Roll, and reported the overall grades students received for first quarter.

The board approved of his report.

Holcomb gave his superintendent’s report. He said all the students received free vision exams, and will receive dental exams within the next month.

Holcomb reported the ABC Foundation Organization had its first meeting Thursday evening, Nov. 16.

This new organization was created to hand out scholarships to graduates. Holcomb said the organization already has its first interested donor.

Holcomb reported on money the district has received from the Nevada Elks Lodge and Nevada Masonic Lodge. He said the money will go towards new Chromebooks needed for students in 2024-25. He also said with Christmas approaching, they are going to make certain each student receives a coat.

The board approved his report.

Next months meeting is scheduled for Dec. 21.
