James Dorton Lawrence, 74, Nevada, Mo., died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006, at Christian Health Care, Nevada, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Dec. 8, 1931, in Independence, Mo., to Weber Lawrence and Grace Dorton Lawrence.

James spent his early childhood in Orrrick, Mo., and later in Des Moines, Iowa. He graduated from East High School in Des Moines. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers International Association, Local Union No. 45 for over 50 years. He enjoyed fishing, working on cars and spending time with his grandchildren.

James is survived by his wife of 55 years, Gloria Lawrence, of the home; two sons, Jim Lawrence and wife Jean, Milo, and Jeff Lawrence, Truro, Iowa; two daughters, Julie Smith and husband Thomas, Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Amy Teems and husband Brian, Nevada; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandson; one sister Patty Fagen of Oregon. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Malissa.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Local arrangements are under the direction of Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.
