Sophie's Journal
(Column ~ 03/25/07)
Hi neighbors. Last year when my computer had a major breakdown, I lost my copy of "Sophie's Journal." Written in 1936 by my father's great-aunt, the journal has been passed around the family for years and enjoyed by all. Sophie was born in Indiana in 1856 and in 1879 migrated with 13 others to Missouri where they settled in Polk County. Her writing style is unique and her tone and phrasing are endearing. I'd like to share some of her journal with you...

Lessons in Growing Up
(Column ~ 03/25/07)
This past week, I received from Daedalus, my favorite discount book dealer, a volume entitled "Growing Up: A Classic American Childhood" and subtitled "What Kids should Know Before they Leave Home." Neither of my New York parents drew up lists of what my little sister Beverly and I ought to know before leaving the confines of "The Empire State." In retrospect, I think it would've been a very good idea, not only drawing up such a list but actually showing six-year-younger sister Bev and me such intricate techniques as balancing my new check book; taking my dirty clothes into town and stuffing them all into the nearest washing machine; (this was long before each and every home had its own washing machine plugged into a wall in the basement); elementary manners when escorting a young woman to a restaurant and a movie, then back to her dorm. ...

ake Vernon County a better place to live
(Letter to the Editor ~ 03/25/07)
Make Vernon County a better place to live Dear editor: I can think of no one more opposed to taxes than I am opposed to them. As I prepare to submit my state and federal income taxes, I am working hard at not being cranky. As the 125th District State Representative, I am very proud that the 93rd General Assembly did not raise taxes and that the 94th General Assembly is on the verge of actually eliminating Missouri State income tax on retirement pensions...

Unlikely collaboration
(Letter to the Editor ~ 03/25/07)
Dear editor: It isn't often, if ever, it seems, that the concerns of feminists and Confederates converge, or come any closer to each other than heckling distance. Surely most will agree, feminists are to be found largely on the leftward side of the political spectrum. Being out to "liberate" us from traditional shackles, they're liberals...

Deep Thoughts
(Column ~ 03/25/07)
Here are good thoughts from "Seeds of Greatness" by Denis Waitley: Words to forget: I can't I have to. Impossible, worried, yes, but, difficult, problem; I, me, my, hate Words to remember: I can. I will. I want to. You, your. Possible, interested, I understand. Challenging. Opportunity,...

Nevada looking to improve in '07
(High School Sports ~ 03/25/07)
By Joe Warren Herald-Tribune NEVADA, Mo. -- Losing 10 seniors off a squad that finished 8-12 a year ago usually lends itself to a trying season. That may not be the case for the 2007 Nevada Tiger baseball team. The Tigers return their top two pitchers and have a good crop of young talent ready to step in as head coach Jared Brown hopes Nevada can actually take a step forward this year...

Recent Saints success far from paper bag days
(Sports Column ~ 03/25/07)
The amazing success achieved by the New Orleans Saints this season set me to thinking once again about old Clyde. Now, let me tell you who Clyde was. His name wasn't really Clyde, but everyone at the Nevada Daily Mail used to be called something other than what they were actually named. Clyde was a muscular, red-headed pressman who smiled a lot, enjoyed a good joke and knew exactly nothing about the game of football. Didn't pretend to. Didn't care...

Spoonbill season is time to catch the really big fish
(Sports Column ~ 03/25/07)
Two Raytown spoonbill anglers, Jeff Moss and Kirk Stephens, were up early last Wednesday night joining many other snaggers on the Osage River near Osceola to open the 2007 start of the spoonbill snagging season. When the clock hit midnight, the splash of heavy sinkers hitting the water could be heard up and down the river. After making many casts, Stephens hooked a fish around 3 a.m. while nearby other snaggers were pulling in some of the monster paddlefish...
