Commission discusses watershed protection plan

The Vernon County Commission met with David Clyman, District Conservationist for the United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service to discuss the Emergency Watershed Protection Program. The purpose of the Emergency Watershed Protection program, according to the USDA's Web site, is "to undertake emergency measures, including the purchase of flood plain easements, for runoff retardation and soil erosion prevention to safeguard lives and property from floods, drought, and the products of erosion on any watershed whenever fire, flood or any other natural occurrence is causing or has caused a sudden impairment of the watershed.". ...

Fritts pleads not guilty in cases relating to thefts

Andrew Gene Fritts was arraigned Tuesday afternoon in a Vernon County Circuit Court on five felony counts of stealing, one felony count of tampering with a witness, and one felony count of tampering with a motor vehicle. The charges stem from a string of incidents from March 15 to March 22 of this year and from a seperate incident on July 17...

Paving is under way at Nevada municipal airport

Workers from Sapp & Sons works to clear up a problem with their paving machine Wednesday evening so they can start laying the new concrete runway at the Nevada Municipal Airport. The plan was to work all night Wednesday to lay a strip of concrete 2,500 feet long and 37.5 feet wide and to then repeat the process Thursday night. After the first half of the runway cures for seven days they will come back and lay the other side of the runway...
