Nevada R-5 school board sets tax levy

A tax rate hearing conducted during a regular meeting of the Nevada R-5 Board of Education Wednesday night, failed to draw a single member of the public. The No Child Left Behind program came into criticism from the board during a discussion of the district's performance on the Annual Yearly Progress Report. For several years the district has received an 'accredited with distinction award' for the district's efforts to educate Nevada area youth, however the school is in a Level I Improvement status based upon the district's student performance in communication arts and math on the MAP test...

R-5 school board rejects bond refinancing

During a meeting Wednesday night, the Nevada R-5 Board of Education considered refinancing the bonds issued by the district but Dr. Allan Crader and Heather Mudd of L.J. Hart and Company explained that the cost of doing so would be prohibitive. Instead, the two said a pre-payment of principal would save the district money without going to the expense of calling the current bonds and issuing new ones...

Cemetery rehab is a labor of love

There's a lot going on at the Balltown Cemetery and the activity can be credited to Robert Seater, a retired naval officer who has adopted the cemetery as a multi-year project. A new monument and flagpole honor veterans of all branches and eras of service, a research project brought in a ground penetrating radar to investigate the Grand Army of the Republic area of the cemetery to locate potential graves west of the known grave sites and the GAR space is being rehabilitated with new granite curbing and posts that copy the original limestone and the markers are being repaired and set upright once more.. ...
