Two injured in unrelated traffic crashes Jan. 27

A two-vehicle crash occured Wednesday afternoon 1 mile north of U.S. Highway 54 on Route AA when a 1989 Pontiac driven by Derek C. Edmiston, 53, of El Dorado Springs, pulled out of a private drive into the path of a southbound 2001 Kia Optima driven by Breann D. Jackson, 18, of Harwood Mo. The Jackson vehicle struck the Edmiston vehicle in the rear. Jackson was transported by ambulance to the Cedar County Memorial Hospital with minor injuries...

Smith on road to recovery from lung transplant

Amanda Smith, a young Nevada woman who moved to St. Louis in October to be near the Barnes Jewish Hospital and await a double lung transplant finally received the call she had been waiting for at 9:56 a.m. on Friday, Jan 15. Smith was alone at the time of the call because her mother, Kathy Smith, "had gone to get some gas." Amanda called her mother and gave her the news, so she rushed back to the apartment and they went to the hospital where they "finally took her downstairs about 4:30," according to Kathy Smith.. ...

Wednesday evening President Obama spoke to the nation in his first State of the Union address. Obama had given a speech to a joint session of Congress in 2009 but it was not a State of the Union address. Among other things, the president talked of "difficult challenges,": discussing steps such as the bank bailout, extending unemployment and other benefits, and tax cuts, outlining some of the benefits of the stimulus bill, calling for a new jobs bill focusing on boosting small business financing opportunities, and for training for "clean energy jobs," saying other countries are moving ahead on this. ...
