On July 15, 1951, Arch Forkner was sent to Camp Crowder for induction into the Army, along with another Vernon County man, Harry Gammon of Harwood. After a couple of weeks of learning how to say, "No, Sir; Yes, Sir; and No excuse, Sir," and the correct way to make a bed, and getting issued clothes, he was sent to Fort Leonard Wood.
