Local growers share production insights with tour
(Local News ~ 06/26/12)
Nevada Daily Mail Thirty-two current and former agricultural University of Missouri extension specialists gathered in Nevada on Wednesday and Thursday to learn from some of the successful agricultural operations and businesses in Vernon County, among which was Vernon County producer Joe Wilson's operation. All corners of Missouri were represented by this group. Specialists from as far away as the Bootheel and from the far northeastern part of Missouri "came to see what producers are doing over here,"said Wayne Prewitt, agricultural business specialist in Nevada, who coordinated the tours. The group is part of the Explore Missouri Tour, held each summer as part of the final responsibilities of the past president of the Missouri Agricultural Extension professional group for MU Extension agricultural specialists. This year, the group was able to view eight tour stops -- more than the usual number -- a feat made possible because Vernon County has so many unique farm operations that are closely situated. This year, they visited Missouri Northern Pecans, Joe Wilson Pecan Grove/Elderberry Planting, Earlswood Dairy, Green Springs Bull Test Station, Kitten Creek South Dairy, Twin County Produce, Bates County Produce and store and Record Harvest. Overall, the specialists appeared to have been amazed at the diversity of the agricultural enterprises in the county and the willingness by producers to work together for the greater good of the group, according to Prewitt.
