During the Civil War, at Christmas, soldier's thoughts often were of home and their families. This of course is as true today as it was then and the following entries from the diary of Capt. Charles W. Porter of the 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry echo these thoughts. Also included are several verses from the popular Civil War song "Tenting tonight on the Old Camp Ground" which reflects the feelings of the men who wore the Blue and the Gray and are still valid today...

Nevada Daily Mail A 40-year-old male was taken into custody by Bates County deputies following a vehicle chase that culminated in a vehicle crash. The suspect was wanted on an outstanding warrant from Vernon County. On Jan. 5, at approximately 5 p.m., the Bates County Sheriff's Office received information about a careless and imprudent driver in a Blue 2006 Ford Mustang southbound on I-49 Highway at the north end of the county. ...

The Sheldon Panthers varsity basketball team dealt Ballard a 51-39 defeat on Homecoming Night Friday at Sheldon. With their second consecutive victory the Panthers improve to 4-6 overall and 3-3 in the Golden Valley Vernon County Conference. "We're improving," Panthers head coach Tyler Judd said. "We're going through some growing pains with a young team and will get better as the season goes on."...

The Archers of St. Louis Community College breezed past the Cottey Comets Saturday afternoon at Hinkhouse Center. The 88-63 loss dropped Cottey to 3-7 overall. Judith Rae Potter, 83, Nevada, Mo., passed away on Jan. 9, 2016, at Moore-Few Care Center, in Nevada. Judith was born Jan. 15, 1932, in Syracuse, Kan., to Lewis Junior and Mary Mae (Shelton) Henderson. On Aug. 20, 1950, she was united in marriage to Everett Oden Potter in Eureka, Kan., and he preceded her in death on Dec. 10, 1998...

A furious fourth-quarter rally came up just short as the Nevada Tigers eighth-grade basketball team was defeated 42-37 in its season-opener against defending Tri-County Conference regular and post-season champion, Webb City Cardinals. Trailing by 10 points late in the fourth quarter, the Tigers went on a 10-3 blitz to slice the Cardinals lead to 40-37.
