The latest craze on Facebook has many of my generation looking back and posting pictures of our first cars, especially the ones we truly loved. I once had the opportunity to own my very own Nash family sedan, but opted instead for a car that better enticed my youthful sentiments. If you are from my generation you will always remember the 1958 hit song from the title of this story...

Editor's Note: The following column originally appeared in the Feb. 19, 2004 edition of the Nevada Daily Mail. I hated to see another store leave the Square when the Shoe Wearhouse went out of business. I didn't buy very many pairs of shoes there, because I don't buy very many pairs of shoes. I seem to have feet that are hard to fit and if I find a pair that fits well, then I wear them until they are an embarrassment...

Nevada Tigers' junior Clay Gayman was named to the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association Class 4 All-State basketball team, while Montrose High senior guard Gage Thompson was named to the Missouri Class 1 All-State boys' team. Gayman helped lead Nevada to one of its best seasons in program history, as the Tigers finished 23-4 overall, while making an appearance in the district championship game. ...

The Cottey Comets returned to Vanek Family Field Wednesday afternoon as they hosted a twinbill with visiting Kansas City Kansas Community College. Cottey (6-10) edged KCKCC 6-5 in the opener, before dropping the nightcap 10-2. In the opener, the Comets came out hot as they plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. ...

Nevada native Kynndrick Brooks, 10, placed second at the recent Region C Missouri USA Wrestling Tournament in Seneca. Brooks, who competes in the 60-pound 10u division, now heads to Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis for the Missouri USA Wrestling Finals, slated for this weekend...

It was a familiar feeling on Thursday for the Nevada golf team, as the Tigers collected first place for a fourth consecutive season at the Neosho Kickoff Tournament. "The boys love playing in this tournament," Nevada coach Brian Leonard said. "We were pretty comfortable going into this tournament, and it's a good way for the boys to see what they need to be working on in order to improve for our upcoming tournaments."...

It's spring, the outdoors are coming alive. White bass are starting their spawning run, walleye have been moving, trout parks are open, snagging for paddlefish is going strong and turkeys have been heard gobbling early in the morning. A neighbor asked if I had been scouting for turkeys since it's less than a month away before the spring season opens with Youth Weekend Hunt on April 8-9, followed by the three-week regular season starting April 17...

The Nevada Lady Tiger track-and-field team is off to a flying start after placing first at Thursday's season opening Butler Invitational. The Lady Tigers won the 15-team event with a team score of 101, while Adrian finished runner-up with a score of 84.5...

If its 2017 season opener is any indication, good things are in store this season for Hume Lady Hornets softball. Playing at home Thursday evening, Hume throttled the Northeast Vernon County Lady Knights 19-4 in a run-ruled three inning contest. "I thought we played very well," Lady Hornets' head coach Tammy Metcalf said. "The girls talked and communicated on the field and the teamwork was good. I was really impressed."...
