The magical basement
(Column ~ 07/18/14)
A friend of mine recently related an experience where they discovered that a cabin they rented had an open shower with no curtains or shower doors. This triggered in my memory a similar shower from my youth. That shower was in the basement of the first home I ever remember, a place of many diverse and interesting apparatuses...

Family and friends are very important
(Column ~ 07/18/14)

I guess the unstable person won't notice the bulletproof vest, stun gun, billy club, 15-shot handgun, leather gloves, leather boots or handcuffs...

This person had just learned that their neighbor had purchased a firearm for home protection. I was confused for during the first part of the conversation because I was assuming the neighbors must be some kind of troublemakers or doing something illegal if the person I was talking to was so upset about it. ...

Weird calendar days in July
(Column ~ 07/18/14)
Hi neighbors. Although the "normal" calendar shows very little to celebrate during the rest of July, certain so-called weird calendars list strange holidays for every day of any month. Here is a composite example. The 19th you can celebrate National Raspberry Cake Day or Stick Out Your Tongue Day, or play a few games of chess to recognize International Chess Day...

Reading and imagination -- the endless frontier
(Column ~ 07/18/14)
Reading -- what a wonderful ability. To travel to a distant land, live history, experience the future, meet people and visit new places, and learn of today, both at home and abroad, it's all possible by just reading the printed word. Many of us are familiar with the RIF program --reading is fundamental...
